Monarch
Queen Victoria (reigned 1837–1901)
Queen Victoria presided over Britain's transformation into the world's leading industrial and imperial power, reigning for 63 years — the longest of any British monarch until Queen Elizabeth II.
The British Empire
During Victoria's reign, the British Empire reached its greatest extent, covering around a quarter of the world's land surface. Britain had colonies and territories across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific. In 1876 Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India.
The Empire brought enormous wealth to Britain but also involved conquest and exploitation of other peoples. The legacy of the British Empire continues to shape the world today.
The Industrial Revolution
The Victorian era coincided with the height of the Industrial Revolution. Britain led the world in manufacturing, with factories, railways, and steam-powered machinery transforming the economy and society. Cities grew rapidly as people moved from the countryside to work in industry.
Social reformers worked to improve conditions for workers and the poor. Education was expanded and eventually made compulsory for children. The period also saw major advances in science, medicine, and engineering.
Prince Albert and the Great Exhibition
Victoria married her cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1840. They had nine children together. Albert was a keen supporter of science, industry, and the arts.
In 1851 Albert helped organise the Great Exhibition, held in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. It was the first world's fair and showcased industrial and artistic achievements from Britain and around the world. It was a great success and is seen as a symbol of Victorian confidence and industrial power.
Albert died in 1861, and Victoria was devastated. She mourned him for the rest of her life, often wearing black.
